klean slate - step 1 of your routine

klean slate - step 1 of your routine

Cleansing … the foundational first step of your routine. Seems pretty straightforward, right? You wash your face and then move on to the rest of your routine, and yes that is all true… but cleansers do so much more than they are given credit for.

Let’s start with the basics. Cleansers remove bacteria, dead & loosened skin cells, dirt and oil from the skin. While it seems like a simple process, choosing the right cleanser can also help balance hydration levels, exfoliate or help control oil production. Many cleansers on the market contain harsh detergents called sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). skoah cleansers do not contain SLS because they dehydrate and strip the skin of natural oils. Our cleansing agents range from coconut based, oil free surfactants to vegetable-based emulsifiers for a gentler pH balanced cleanse.

So why do we cleanse?

The first is the obvious one - to remove buildup, whether that be dirt, oil or any other unwanted debris. Without washing, the skin would be covered by a thick layer of dirt and grime, making it difficult for other products to penetrate skin properly.

The second reason is to boost hydration. That’s right, we aren’t just cleaning the skin, but also ensuring that the skin is maintaining a proper level of hydration, which helps manage the pH level of the skin, thus enabling sufficient water and product retention.

And last, but not least - to maintain clear skin. Under the skin, there are tiny glands that produce sebum, our naturally occurring oil, which protects the skin from the danger of outside elements. These glands use hair follicles within the skin as a pathway to allow the oil to reach the skin's surface to form a barrier that prevents penetration of bacteria or other harmful agents. Any excessive dirt built up on the surface of the skin can cause blockage of the follicle, trapping the sebum, sweat and dead skin cells. The lack of sebum on the skin’s surface allows bacteria to penetrate the follicle causing inflammation and potentially blemishes and acne. Proper cleaning of the skin clears pores of debris to prevent buildup and allows sebum to reach skin surface unimpeded.

What if you stopped cleansing?

As we discussed above, your pores may get clogged, resulting in the development of blemishes.  Also, you could experience a combination of severe redness, dryness, and irritation from insufficient hydration. This, in turn, can develop into incredible itchiness, and the desire to constantly scratch your face, which could lead to breaks and tears in the skin.

So, to re-cap - the benefits of cleansing in 4 quick points:

  1. Your skin will look radiant and healthy
  2. Helps maintain proper skin care
  3. Helps with anti-aging and high-performance products to work properly
  4. Encourages proper skin hydration and prevents the production of excess oil
