Ingredient Spotlight: Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)

Ever wonder why our iconically skoah hydradew mask is such a fan favourite? This ultra hydrating lightweight mask features glycosaminoglycans as one of the key ingredients!

What are GAGs

GAGs are naturally-occurring carbohydrates that deal with the support and maintenance of skin structural proteins like collagen and elastin - which is essential to keeping skin healthy, happy and balanced. They are water-binding molecules that hold almost 1000 times their own weight, making them excellent for skin hydration!

GAGs in skin care

In skin care products, GAGs are essential to the epidermal and dermal cell metabolism and are considered fundamental components of skin tissue consisting of complex proteins chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, which are skin-replenishing and restoring ingredients, making them ideal for repairing your skin from sun damage, loss of collagen, scarring, blemishes, and more.

What are the benefits of GAGs

Hydration: For those with dry skin, using skincare products that contain GAGs will show significant improvement in skin hydration! Note that the effectiveness of GAGs are dependent upon water intake, so make sure you’re staying hydrated!

Anti-aging: Decreased dermal glycosaminoglycans are believed to contribute to dry skin, wrinkles and fine lines. Using products that contain GAGs can address these issues as they have great anti-aging properties - elastin is what makes your skin plump, bouncy and firm, while increased collagen production means healthier skin!
