Product Spotlight: enzyme mask

The enzyme mask is our latest addition to skoah’s exfoliators. Containing papain – an enzyme derived from papaya – this exfoliating mask is gentle, yet effective. It improves your skin’s texture and tone, along with reducing hyperpigmentation and congestion in the skin.

So, how does it work and what is an enzyme exfoliant? Enzymes are proteolytic which means they break down the protein, specifically keratin, that holds together your dead skin cells. Think of it as melting away the glue that holds the skin cells together, and in turn this exfoliates your skin! The upper layer of your skin is mostly made of dead skin cells containing keratin protein. The enzymes work by specifically breaking down the keratin protein, resulting in smoother skin. Enzyme exfoliants are gentle compared to glycolics such as AHA, which slip deeper into the skin’s barrier. Instead, the enzymes work solely on the surface of the skin, allowing it to be less stimulating on the skin. Additionally, enzymes have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritation in the skin.

The enzyme mask is great for all skin types, but especially those with more sensitive skin as it only works on dead skin cells and does not penetrate deeper into the skin. Apply a thin later on the skin for 10-15 minutes, 2-3x a week depending on your skin for glowing skin!
