my balanced life

As the owner of a quickly growing company, a mother of 2...soon to be 3, a part of a large, extended family with a mother who calls me hourly to ensure I am aware the sun has come up, or that she is in fact decided to wear purple socks, I am frequently asked - 'How  do you maintain balance'.

Quite frankly, I hate this question! I've always been a type A personality, and for awhile I was told I needed to find more balance. So, I did. I set aside time each day for 'me', had a regular schedule of workouts and classes, time with friends, and overall had what most would call 'balance'. But I was miserable! I learned that for me, balance meant having a certain level of chaos underlying my life. I've always loved the satisfaction I get from working long, hard hours and seeing the results of that. In fact, too much 'downtime' simply stressed me out! My mind raced, my body longed for intensity and challenge. And through this experience I realized that 'balance' is simply one's threshold for chaos.

I've learned that mine is high. I kind of thrive in chaos-though it is organized chaos. A part of my 'unbalance' is the fact that I absolutely love what I do each day. Speaking to my staff, being in my stores, working on new products and interacting with my customers is incredibly fun and rewarding. And, throughout my day, I make time for the people in my life that mean the most to me. These include my kids, my husband-who I also work with, my 'purple-sock-wearing mom', and my family. Rather than 'compartmentalize' my time into days on and off and hours on and off, my life all blends into one. And as a result, I'm a little more calm. I don't strive for a day with no phone calls or emails very often. I strive for having a fantastic krew who can interact with each other and our customers positively and effectively. The result is I am updated on greatness versus being asked how to solve problems.

It might seem ironic that the owner of a business that involves relaxation and self kare describes her life as unbalanced, but the way I see it, many skoah customers are just like me! We live chaos filled, unbalanced lives, but crave powerful, quality experiences that give us time to think, relax, and provide us with true results.

I still squeeze in all my passions-time with my kids that's pure quality, trail runs with my dogs and my friends throughout the week, and a regular dose of endorphin pumping excercise.Vacations have work time built in-but that calms me.  I can do this because I am flexible with how or when this happens, and runs turn into business meetings, gym workouts into catching up on email and articles I can't get to otherwise.

My 'unbalanced' life might not work for most, but I've never been more calm then when I have a million things going on.
